FYI – Jeff Herbertson
  -    -  FYI – Jeff Herbertson

Jeff is a badass dude and loves to ride his bike. That is not a big surprise if you live in Aptos and your roommates are Kyle Jameson and Ryan Howard. He throws down everyday, both on his DJ and DH bikes, and is always down to have a good time with his friends.Read more about Jeff and his riding life below.

Introduce yourself.

I am Jeffrey Edward Herbertson, the first.

What do you do for a living?

Working on, working on riding bikes for a living.

How did you get involved with bicycles?

Just being a kid on a ranch learning how to do skids and building wood kickers, one thing led to the next I guess.

What is your best memory to date?

Quite possibly Aggy’s Reunion.

What does riding a bicycle mean for you?

It means not going crazy.  I use biking as an outlet to test myself physically and mentally every day.  As soon as I start riding I can tell what kind of day it is, and I can go from there and work with or change my day based on how real I feel like getting down on my bike that day.  I also like having a semi controlled way to scare and test myself. Knowing that pretty much anything is possible on a bike and deciding what my level of commitment to a certain goal or feature is, really allows me to test my decisions, abilities and limits.

Who do you ride with?

Ray George, R-Dog, KJ, T-Mac, A-Rev, Greg Watts, Big-G, Cam McCaul, C-Bone, and the rest of the crew.  And then theres whoever is staying on our couch.. Carson Storch, the Canadians, or whoever.

Are there any riders or things that inspire you and keep you motivated?

Yes absolutely.  As a rider I get really pumped up when the shredding levels get layer on thick, and I end up doing things that I wouldn’t have done unless I had been inspired to.

The guys I REALLY enjoy watching and riding with are Jamie Goldman, Morgan Wade, Andreu, Cam Zink and Aggy.

All the guys I ride with, and many that I don’t ride with, collectively inspire my riding.  But in terms of what inspires me for style, approach, mentality and innovation those dudes are what’s up.

Could you describe your riding style in five words?

Give’r till she clicks, or deal with it not working.

Have you suffered any injuries because of riding?

Yep. Broken arms, an ankle, a few concussions and a broken spleen.

What does your family think about that?

They are happy that I’m able to do what I love, but I’m sure they worry a little.

Is there something that scares you and nobody else knows?

No. Actually, road bikers.

If you had to choose one of these three things, what would it be?

1. Getting a cover of a mountain-bike magazine.

2. Winning a well-known contest.

3. Filming a full-length video part.

Filming, absolutely… I feel like to date I haven’t made a video that I’m 100% proud of. That’s one of my biggest goals and intentions.  I have started to put in the work, building in the woods and I’m hoping to make a video next winter that I’m truly impressed with.  So getting the opportunity to hopefully do that in something as timeless as a video would be the best.

What are your thoughts on the bicycle industry?

That’s a really open ended question, but, I think bikes aren’t going anywhere. So it’s our job to create the right kind of scene to inspire the next round of consumers in the right direction.

What are your plans for this year?

FEST! all the way. I’m hoping to fest my way to a Rampage invite.

What places would you like to visit?

All of them. And ride them.

Tell us your current set-up.

I’m on a full line of  Pivot bikes.  I’ve been having the most fun on my Phoenix DH lately so thats the one I’ll talk about.  Gotta love the DW link, feels amazing on and off the ground. I just switched from Deity’s Blacklabel bars to some CZ38 bars and I love it.  It suddenly makes my DH bike feel like a big slope bike.  I’m also really impressed with the new Formula RO brakes, crazy amounts of power.

Top 5 riders of all time.

Jamie Goldman (because fun and wow), Brandon Semenuk, Cam Zink, Andreu Lacondeguy and Morgan Wade.

Top 5 videos of all time.
I feel like there are so many great old Kirt Voreis videos that I’ve never seen so its hard to say. NWD 5 had a big impact on me. The Kamloops section from Rad Company will always make me wanna ride. Etnies Grounded because of Ruben. Roam. And of course Git Sum.

If there is anyone that you would like to thank or say anything to them, now it’s your time.

All the boys of course, and Pivot Cycles, Deity, Kali Protectives, Clif Bar, WTB, Stealth Hubs, Formula Brakes and everyone that likes digging!
